WILMER "JAY" MELDRUM

September 29, 2006

WILMER "JAY" MELDRUM, JR. 58, of Three Lakes, MI. passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness on Tuesday, September 26, 2006. He was born in Mt. Clemens, MI. on February 13, 1948 son of the late Wilmer and Berdeen R. (Cartwright) Meldrum, Sr. Jay graduated from Algonac High School in 1966. He was inducted into the Algonac High School Football Hall of Fame. After high school Jay played baseball for the Boston Red Sox. He was a decorated Army veteran serving in Vietnam, discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1969. Jay married the former Judy Roy in Baraga on July 23, 1993. He was a finish carpenter until illness forced his retirement 1 1/2 years ago. Jay was a member of the L'Anse VFW Post 3897. He was an avid hunter and fishermen and enjoyed introducing young people to the outdoors. Jay had a keen sense of humor that continued during his illness. In addition, he took pleasure in growing vegetables in his garden. Mr. Meldrum is survived by his loving wife, Judy, children, Anthony M. Kozel of Three Lakes, Beverly J. Kozel of Marine City, MI. , Rachel A.Kozel (John Howe) of Three Lakes, Lisa Meldrum, of Lower Michigan and Sherry (Brent) Appleton of Algonac, MI., 7 grandchildren, 2 brothers, Raymond Meldrum of Florida, and Tim Meldrum of Arkansas. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service for Mr. Meldrum was held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2006 at the Michigamme Cemetery with Pastor Charles Tooman officiating. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors at the cemetery Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. The family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with arrangements.
