My dearest friend I’m saddened by your passing. I’m glad to have served with you in Iraq. I thought you might like to know I finally made it to 20 years. I still have the year book of our time in Iraq and it sure was a long time. After our time in Iraq I went into the National Gaurd in 2008 did a year there took a break then came back in, in 2011 to finish my Army career in 2023. I knew things were going to change age in 2005 after our first deployment it saddens me I didn’t want our crew to break apart but it did. The core group from what I can tell left the service but James Glavez and I stayed in to do our 20. Bryan moved to Florida (back). Until I see you again in heaven I promise to live a life you would want me to live full and adventurous. Your missed you brother. Sappers Forward!! Beast Don’t Quit!! 91st En Bn B Co 2003.

Derek was one of the first friends that I made at Fort Hood. Derek always had half a grin on his face and more often than not his glasses were a bit crooked. Derek was the kind of guy that could always bring a smile to your face. We enjoyed many drunken nights in Austin Texas. Derek was always willing to help out a brother in need, and Derek always had a brother's back. You will be missed brother. Rest Easy.
I cherish our childhood memories... there's not just one to share. May those sweet moments be remembered by everyone blessed enough to know you.
