WILLIAM H. "BILL" MAYO

September 11, 2003

WILLIAM “BILL” H. MAYO, 84, of Baraga, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2003 at the Franciscan Rehabilitation Center in Appleton, WI., following a period of ill health. He was born in Baraga, MI. on March 14, 1919 son of the late William H. and Albina (Foucault) Mayo. Bill attended Baraga High School and was very active in sports. He married the former Marguerite “Marcy” Bohmier on October 29, 1938 in Assinins, MI. Bill worked for the Ford Motor Company in L’Anse, LaCourt Gas Company of Baraga and later was co-owner of the frozen food lockers of Baraga. In 1961 he went to work for the Pettibone Corporation. He worked as receiving and office manager until his retirement in 1983. Bill served as Village Mayor for 4 years and was instrumental in bringing the Superior National Bank Branch into Baraga. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, St. Kateri Church, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, St. Ann’s Parish Custodian, and Baraga Land Senior Citizens. He was a former Baraga County Commissioner, and school board member. Bill will be remembered for his humor during his bartending days, his athletic abilities all through high school and on into his twilight years. He loved to play baseball, basketball and horseshoes. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. His greatest passion, however, was spending time with his family. Mr. Mayo is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marguerite “Marcy”, sons; James (Rose Marie “Suzie”) Mayo,and Gary (Jeannine) Mayo both of Baraga, daughters; Marcia (Curt) Lindstrom of Stevens Point., WI., Karen (Mickey) Keck, Mary Ellen Patovisti and Alice Maki all of Neenah, WI., 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, brother; Clarence Snell of Jamestown, N.C., sister, Stella Marie Baril of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and 1 sister. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 11, 2003 from St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father James Ziminski, celebrant. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday September 10, 2003 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse, with a parish prayer service at 6:00 p.m. and a visitation at the church Thursday, September 11 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. Mr. Mayo’s obituary may also be viewed at www.rfsc.net.
