AGNES A. "AGGIE" BESONEN's Obituary
AGNES A. “AGGIE” BESONEN, 87, of Baraga, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L'Anse where she had been a patient for 5 days. She was born in Pelkie, MI. on July 15, 1922 the daughter of the late Antti and Aurora (Haapanpaa) Maki. Aggie graduated from Baraga High School in 1940. She married Arne Mantta on November 23, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1970. In April 1972 she married Jack Calkins and he preceded her in death 1992. Then on January 19, 1995 she married Edwin Besonen. He preceded her in death in February of 2000. Aggie had worked at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in the billing department until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie and was active in the Alston VFW Auxiliary for more than 40 years. In her leisure time Aggie enjoyed cross country skiing which she continued doing into her 70's.
Mrs. Besonen is survived by her loving sons, Lawrence E. (Karen) Mantta of Keweenaw Bay, and Lane A. (Mikie) Mantta of Alston, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and sister Viola Karvakko of Baraga. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald A. Mantta, sister Hilma, and brothers Alec, Wilbert, Reino, Wilho “Buck”, Edwin and Rudolph.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2010 from Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor John Autio officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. At 10:30, a VFW Auxiliary service was conducted. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials in Mrs. Besonen's honor may be directed to Mission United Lutheran Church.
