BERTHOLD A. "CURLY" COTE's Obituary
BERTHOLD A. "CURLY" COTE, 94, of L'Anse, MI.,passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 20 ,2009 at Westside Residential Care in L'Anse where he was residing. He was born in Baraga on April 28, 1914 the son of the late John N. and Emma (Stone) Cote. Curly graduated from Baraga High School in 1933. He married the former Isabelle Anderson at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L'Anse on June 26, 1937. She preceded him in death in 1980. Curly was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L'Anse, a life time member of the International Operating Engineers, and Union Local 324. He worked for Gundlach Contracting for over 17 years and was a skilled operator of heavy equipment. Following his retirement, he worked for may years with Olsen Tree Service. Curly enjoyed fishing and spending time at his beach property at Second Sands. He was a familiar figure at the gas station downtown L'Anse.
Mr. Cote is survived by his loving sons, Francis (Stevie) Cote of Dearborn, and William "Bill" (Candy) of Westerville, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews and a host of friends He was preceded in death by his brothers, George, Leo, and Fred, and 2 sisters, Mary (Henry) Voskuhl and Ursula (Theil) Sands. Being the sole survivor of his family Curly often referred to himself as the "Last of the Mohicans"
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L'Anse with Father Augustin George, Celebrant. Spring interment will take place in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The family greeted friends at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of the Mass.
