BEULAH S. CARKEEK's Obituary
Beulah S. Carkeek, age 100, of L’Anse, passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at Bayside Village, L’Anse. She was born in Post Lake, Wisconsin on February 14, 1914, the daughter of the late Adolph and Jenny (Manney) Winnega. Her family moved to Pequaming when she was a young child. Beulah graduated from L’Anse High School in 1932. Following graduation she worked at the Pequaming Post Office, L’Anse Area Schools and Haanpaa Ford Motor Company in L’Anse. She married Byron Carkeek in L’Anse on June 1, 1940. Together they purchased the Sinclair Oil Company in L’Anse where Beulah was the office manager. Following their retired in 1969 they spent the winters in Florida. Byron preceded her in death in 1984. She was a member of United Methodist Church, L’Anse. Beulah enjoyed bowling and chaperoning the Golden Eagles Jr Drum and Bugle Corp on their trips. She was an active member of the Rebecca Lodge in her younger years as well as the VFW Auxiliary. Beulah loved playing cards, bowling, and crocheting.
Mrs. Carkeek is survived by her loving children Judith (Ed) Vander Zanden of L’Anse and Patricia (Bob) Kissel of Baraga, 9 grandchildren Jeannie Funke of San Jose, CA., Kurt Funke (Sarah Cram-Hoppe) of Clinton, Iowa, Michele (Steve) Martinac of Ishpeming, Karen (Steve) Rexford of L’Anse, Kathi (Bob) Warner, of L’Anse, Krissi (Tim) Kristo of L’Anse, James (Henny) Vander Zanden of L’Anse, Ted (Kristie) Kissel of Baraga, and Kerri (Bill) Sikkila of L’Anse, 27 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, and 1 sister.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carkeek were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, 6, 2014 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Reverend Steve Rhoades officiating. Interment took place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Friday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Following the funeral service, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral chapel.
