DANIEL J. "DAN" CRESS's Obituary
DANIEL J. CRESS, age 76, of Aura, MI. passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on April 29, 1934 in Phillips, WI., the son of the late Victor and Myrtle (Jones) Cress. Daniel graduated from Phillips High School in 1953. He served in the United States Army with the. G 10th Infantry Division stationed in Germany. Dan formerly owned Dan Cress Realty in Phillips, WI. He was the Postmaster in Phillips, Wisconsin for nine years and sold insurance for the Cress Insurance Agency. Dan was a member of United Lutheran Church in L’Anse. He was a lifetime member of the L’Anse V.F.W. Post #3897 and the D.A.V. Dan also was a member of the L’Anse Eagles Club Aerie #2287. He married the former Arlene Cavanaugh in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 21, 1994. They divided their time between Florida and Aura. Always active, Dan worked following his retirement as a self-employed carpenter and enjoyed building his home on Huron Bay and doing carpentry jobs in Florida during the winter. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and carpentry projects. Dan loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson.
Mr. Cress is survived by his loving wife Arlene, daughters Evie Cress of Madison, WI., and Carolyn Cress of Wausau, WI., stepchildren JoAnn (Leo) Hilsendager of Aurora, CO., Chuck Cavanaugh of L’Anse, Lisa Collins of L’Anse, and Lori Snow of Cape Coral, FL., grandchildren Melissa, Jeremy, Chris, Dan, Kelsi, Dylan, Aaron, and Isaac, great grandchild Lucas, brother Peter (Nancy) Cress of Phillips, WI., sister Amelia Landmeister of New Jersey, sister-in-law Shirley Cress. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his son Larry, brothers, Joseph, Thomas, and Robert, sisters Rose, Violet, Louise, and Margie.
A memorial celebration for Mr. Cress was held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010 from United Lutheran Church, L’Anse with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Interment will take place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Monday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Military honors for Mr. Cress were conducted at the church at 12:45 p.m.
