I have just heard of Denise's passing( it is 2007). I cannot tell you how sad I am for you and Denise's mother and brothers..I met Denise at PVH, while my husband was a student at MTU, and I worked in the ER at PVH with her. I am just going to say, she was AMAZING.. She taught me to make apple cider, to quilt, to enjoy smoked salmon, and truly to appreciate every given day. And how that women loved and adored Christmas, still makes me smile. I have a Ukranian egg, that she made me, about 20 yrs ago. She was a gift, and please know how much she will be missed and thought of everyday. Her smile is still in my memory, as she talked to people coming into the ER. What a joy..

To the Marth/Newark families: Please accept my condolences on behalf of the John Marshall High School, Class of 1970. Although I really did not know Denise, her name crossed my computer every few years when we planned for our reunions. Our 35th was held this past weekend and we were informed of Denise's sudden passing by classmate Nancy Brenning Day. We were saddened by the news, but know she was with us in spirit.

Dear Peter and Family: It is very hard to put things into perspective, and thoughts into words, when something as devastating as this happens. I met Denise about 22 years ago, and at that time I told her something that very few people know - the next day I received a "Thinking of You" letter, and we've been friends evwer since. And she was still writing me her 'notes', almost weekly. And I was, by far, not the only one, there are countless others who received notes of 'Thanks', and/or encouragement constantly. She was one of the most loyal and trustworthy people that I have ever met, (and the most driven), and I cannot imagine my life, or life in Baraga County, witout her. She was the catalyst in so many dreams and schemes in this County. She was fearless in her fight for justice for everyone. Like she told us all so many times - "I've slept w/Mountain Lions, nothing can scare me." And she was true to her word. The young people of this community are without their 'mentor', we are all without our 'driving force', and we must all work together to carry on her work. It will be impossible to fill the void created by her passing, but if we all work together, and remember her, her dreams and her vision, we can create a true memorial to her - - Like she always said, "We've GOT to get it done!!!"

Dear Pete - I am so, so sorry to hear of Denise's passing. I always heard through the Cleveland connection (from Rose to my mom to me) what she was up to next. I know she kept in contact with my mom, particularly after mom became ill. Denise sent me a grapvine heart after my mom's passing which I hung in my dining room and it hangs there still. She is truly one of the most genuinely kind people I ever met. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sadness.

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your wife, daughter, sister. I worked with Denise at Portage View. I was a housekeeper on the third floor. She was an excellent nurse. She worked on fifth floor mostly, but sometimes she worked the third floor. She was very much loved by us all at P.V. Hospital. Again, my deepest condolences.

Dear Peter and Family: Words simply cannot express the saddness that we felt upon hearing the tragic news. Denise did so much for both of us even to the extent of getting Eliot involved as a volunteer in tribal programs. There is absolutely no question that she touched the lives of many at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and thoughtout the Copper Country in a wonderful manner. She is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

I met Denise at Trout Unlimited and could see that she was a volunteer. Then for the flower sales. I thought this is a person that really helps the community. I offered her my email address and promised to help on her projects. She will be missed. Yes, her smile and laughter shined.

Dear Peter and family. Denise was my role model of what a nurse should be when I first started out as a graduate nurse at Portage Hospital. She was kind and so helpful, willing to give a beginning nurse a chance. She was an example for many others who were in my shoes, frightened when just beginning in this responsible and highly regarded profession. Denise had integrity and a good heart. She was an inspiration to all. She will be sadly missed by those who were fortunate to have benefited by her care.
