DONALD A. "DOC" MANTTA's Obituary
DONALD A. “DOC” MANTTA, 61, of Alston, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, May 16, 2009 with his family by his side. He was born in Hancock on January 30, 1948 the son of Arne and Agnes (Maki) Mantta. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1966. Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1968 until 1970 as a combat medic spending that time in Vietnam. Upon his discharge, he worked for the Department of Natural Resources as a fire fighter and various other positions. On August 1, 2008 he married the former Deborah Sleep. Doc was a member of the Baraga American Legion Post 444. He enjoyed playing cribbage, working crosswords, trivia and carried on the family interest in woodworking.
Mr. Mantta is survived by his loving wife, Deborah of Alston, son, Joseph Lawrence (Andrea) Mantta of Alston, granddaughter, Alexis Mae Mantta of Alston, mother, Agnes Besonen of Baraga, brothers, Lawrence Edward (Karen) Mantta of Keweenaw Bay, and Lane Arnold Mantta of Alston. The Parker children, Bob, Josh, Olivia, and Sam will always hold a very special place in his heart. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services for Mr. Mantta were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2008 from Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor John Autio officiating. Interment took place in the Pelkie Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors for Mr. Mantta were conducted at graveside under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444.
