DONALD E. TOLONEN SR.'s Obituary
Donald E. Tolonen, Sr., 69, of L'Anse, passed away at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital long term care unit Friday, June 25, 2004 He had been a resident there for a month. Mr. Tolonen was born February 9, 1935 in Elo, Mi., the son of the late Andrew and Sylvia(Johnson) Tolonen. He attended the Doelle School in Tapiola. He was employed by the city of Dearborn as a repairman in the water department. Upon his return to the area in 1975, he worked at the Celotex Corporation, Pettibone Company and the White Pine Mine. Donald was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Red Wings, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was fond of animals. He had a knack for taming a variety of wild creatures. He could often be seen on his bicycle traveling the local streets and area roads.
Donald had been married to the former Myrtle Matthews and is survived by their children; sons Donald Jr. and Glenn Tolonen of Zeba, John Henry Tolonen of Marquette and daughter Cheryl (Donald) Denomie of Zeba; grandchildren Charlotte, Trista, Beth, Joseph, Bridgett, Cheryne, Tyler, Callie, Carman, Jeffry, Shawnee, Ashley, Keith, Kevin, Samantha, Raymond, Glenn Jr., Macie; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Darrin, Joey, and Jonathon; brother Walter (Patrica) Tolonen of Livonia; sisters Evelyn (Herman) Macgouen of Wyandotte, MI., Jean (Michael) Hanik of Taylor, MI., Delores (James) Callahan of Southgate, MI., Linda (Larry) Jones of Gladwin, MI., Cynthia (Frank) Moreno of Canton, MI., and Carol Tahtinen of Baraga, special aunt Evelyn Stang of Elo. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Donald was preceded in death by a brother Hubert.
Funerals services for Mr. Tolonen were held Tuesday June 29, 2004 at 3 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Judy Mattson officiating. Interment took place in the Pinery Cemetery. Friends were received at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Tuesday.
