Don was one of the first people I worked for in the DNR in 1972; I was lucky to be assigned to work with him for the first two years of my career. He was a great mentor and gave me a wealth of training and experience I used throughout my time with the agency. More than that he became a good friend. I always valued his counsel when I had a tough question or situation I was working through. Our paths crossed frequently and I was always the better for it. You never had to wonder what he was thinking; he was a practical, considerate person that was always willing to help someone in a time of need. The direction that he provided to the DNR forest fire program is still being felt today. I was lucky to know him and work for and with him for many years. He will be missed by many; rest in peace Don.
