DOROTHY E. SYRJALA's Obituary
DOROTHY E. SYRJALA, 80, of Watton, MI. passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Covington, MI. on July 7, 1926 the seventh child of the late Emil and Eva (Chaulklin) Kantola. Dorothy attended school in Covington and graduated from L’Anse High School in 1942. She was a seamstress for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, retiring after 19 years. Dorothy married Douglas Syrjala in L’Anse on April 20, 1974. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Sidnaw and a lifetime member of the Covington VFW Post 8945 Ladies Auxiliary. Her hobbies included handiwork; tatting, crocheting, reading, and playing cards anytime and anyplace. Dorothy loved caring for a long line of canine companions including her current “sons” Mister Butch and Roscoe,
Mrs. Syrjala is survived by her loving husband, Douglas, daughters, Dorothy (John) Beckman of Canton, MI. and Jacqueline Giroux of Cleveland, OH., grandchildren, Sarah Beckman of Minneapolis MN., Robert Beckman of Canton, MI., Nikolas (Daria) Rongers of Atlantic Beach, FL., and Jordon Rongers of New Orleans, LA., brother, William "Bill" (Marge) Kantola of Covington, sisters, Ruth Selden of L’Anse and Helen Kettula of Calvert City, KY. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse with Father Augustin George officiating. Interment took place in the Covington Cemetery. The family received friends on Friday, September 29, 2006 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse from 6 until 8 p.m. and at church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass. Friday evening a parish prayer service was held at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Covington VFW Post 8945 Ladies Auxiliary service at 7 p.m. A fellowship and luncheon was held at the Covington VFW Post 8945 directly following the interment on Saturday. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with arrangements.
