ELNA KATHLEEN LOUKO's Obituary
ELNA K. LOUKO, age, 88, of Nisula, MI, passed away Monday, October 3, 2011 at Superior Health Haven, Munising, MI. She was born in Alston, MI on October 14, 1922, the daughter of the late Victor and Alda (Jarvinen) Louko. After graduation from Baraga High School in 1940 she then attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, graduating in 1946. Elna received an MA in 1952 from the University of Michigan. Her first teaching position was in Big Bay, then in Menominee, MI; from there she went to Germany for two years. Upon her return in 1952, she joined the Colorado Springs School District where she remained until her retirement. Elna continued to live in Colorado Springs where her passions were skiing and hiking in the Rocky Mountains. In June 2006 she relocated to Marquette.
Elna is survived by her sisters Victoria Des Prez of Cloverdale, CA, Ester Binns of Cincinnati, OH, and Lily Rydman of Rio Rancho, NM; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her brother Edward Louko of Alston, and sister Margaret Maillis of Wilmette, IL.
Memorial services for Elna were held Sunday at 3 p.m., October 30, 2011 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor John Autio officiating. Interment took place in the Nisula Cemetery. The family greeted friends at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel for one hour prior to the service. Following the memorial service, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the Hilltop Restaurant, L'Anse. Memorials in Elna’s honor may be directed to Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, MI or a charity of you choice.
