ELSIE E. NEVALA's Obituary
ELSIE E. NEVALA, 89, of L’Anse passed away gently on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Shulstad Leisure Living in Baraga following a lengthy illness. She was born in Watton, MI. on December 18, 1921 the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Hiltunen) Heikkinen. Elsie attended school and church in Watton, MI. She married Edwin Nevala in Hancock on February 24, 1940. He preceded her in death. Elsie’s faith and values were lovingly shared with her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was a welcoming homemaker, treating her guests to her delicious fried fish dinners, homemade pasty pies and baked goods. Her green thumb with plants was evident throughout her home and garden. Elsie loved music and traveled on many country music bus tours across the country with her lady friends.
Mrs. Nevala is survived by her children Howard (Janet) Nevala of L’Anse, Gary (Elizabeth) Nevala of Ishpeming, and Lorraine (Larry) Seratti of Iron Mountain, MI. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin, son Richard Nevala, daughters Arlene Kehrer of Salinas, CA and Shirley LaPlante of L’Anse, brother Toivo, and sisters Sylvia, Saimi, and Esther.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nevala were held at 1 pm, Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor John Autio officiating. Interment took place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral chapel on Friday from 11:30 am until the time of the service. Following the service, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel.
