ELSIE E. WENTELA's Obituary
ELSIE E. WENTELA, age 89, of Nisula passed away at her residence on Monday, April 11, 2011 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Winona, MI. on October 23, 1921 the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Lahti) Tammela. Elsie attended school in Laird Twp., Clayco, Horace Mann Schools, and graduated from Baraga High School in 1938. She married Uno Wentela on May 31, 1941 in Washtenaw County. He preceded her in death on December 22, 1973. Elsie was Post Master in Nisula and retired in 1983. She was a member of Alston Apostolic Lutheran Church, and a past member of Alston VFW Auxiliary Post 7646, and the Kaleva Ladies. Elsie was deeply devoted to her family, was an avid reader, enjoyed doing puzzles, current events, walking, and baking
Mrs. Wentela is survived by her loving children Lyle (Patsy) Wentela of Hawaii, Robert Wentela of Pelkie, Bruce (Marcia) Wentela of Marquette, John (Debby) Wentela of Minneapolis, MN., Mary (Pete) Giacoletto of Hancock, Kristine Van Abel of Crystal Falls, Cecelia (Dennis) Shortslef of Hannibal, NY, and Sylvia Wentela (Ed Fugenschuh) of Nisula, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, sister Irene Tammela of San Francisco, CA, and sister-in-law Emma Makela of North Myrtle Beach, SC. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by infant daughters Shirley and Lisa, grandson Jason, and sisters Anne, Edith, and Sylvia.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wentela will be held at 1 pm Monday, April 18, 2011 from Alston Apostolic Lutheran Church with Pastor Jesse Aho officiating. Interment will take place in the Alston Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening April 17, 2011 from 6 until 8 pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse and on Monday at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service. Memorials in Mrs. Wentela’s honor may be directed the Alston Apostolic Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
