GEORGE J. COPPLER's Obituary
GEORGE J. COPPLER, 83, of Watton, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L'Anse, where he had been a patient for a week. He was born in Jerry City, Ohio on July 21, 1926 the son of the late George P. and Margaret (Hutchinson) Coppler. George attended school in Ohio. He served in the US Army during WWII. Following his discharge, George worked as a iron worker on numerous construction projects until his retirement. He married the former Sigrid E. Sikkila in Monroe, Michigan in 1944. She preceded him in death on October 26, 2008. George was a member of Watton Apostolic Lutheran Church, and the Covington VFW Post #8945. He enjoyed his horses, gardening and spending time with his dog Maggie. George was well known for his unique sense of humor.
Mr. Coppler is survived by his loving children, Randy (Debbi) Coppler of Baraga, and Deb (Gerry) Gerard of Florence, WI., grandchildren, Roberta Sue, Jeremy, Abbi, Daniel, and John-David, 8 great grandchildren, sisters, Freda of Taylor, MI., and Margaret of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his “adopted” son and daughter, Fred and Carol Daniels of Lower Michigan. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, and six brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Mr. Coppler were held at 3 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Jim Johnson officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral chapel on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Baraga County Area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors at the funeral chapel on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Memorials in Mr. Coppler's honor may be directed to the Covington VFW Post #8945. Following the services the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral chapel.
