George R Van Cleve's Obituary
George R. Van Cleve, age 78, of L’Anse, passed away Saturday, November 14, 2015 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Marquette, MI on March 26, 1937 the son of the late Paul and Isabelle (Winkle) Van Cleve. George graduated from Graveraet High School and then received his Master’s degree suma cum laude in business finance from Central Michigan University. He served in the US Army, graduating top of his guidance missile class, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. George had been employed as a finance officer for the State of Michigan, retiring in 1989. He married the former Lucretia Marks in Gary Indiana on November 4, 1961. George enjoyed gardening, hunting, woodworking, and most of all, his 3 boys. He played senior tennis and had done tax preparation for individuals in the area for many years.
George was a provider, protector and beloved husband of 54 years and devoted father. Mr. Van Cleve is survived by his loving wife Lucretia, son Douglas (Andrea) Van Cleve of Canton, MI, grandchildren Ava and Logan, and his brother Paul (Joan) Van Cleve of Jacksonville, FL. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons William and Robert and his sister Jessie.
Funeral services for Mr. Van Cleve were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Reverend Evangelist Stephen E. Brady officiating. Military honors were conducted at the funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment took place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
