HELEN F. SLIGER's Obituary
HELEN F. SLIGER, 73, of Covington, MI. passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L’Anse where she had been a patient for 3 days. She was born in Covington, MI. on March 28, 1930 daughter of the late Arvid and Aili (Maki) Tarvainen. Helen graduated from L’Anse High School in 1949. Following high school she was employed as a personal cook in the Lake Forest, IL. area. On September 29, 1956 she married Charles F. Sliger in Covington, MI. From 1962 to 1963 she served as the Trout Creek Twp. Treasurer. Helen owned and operated the “L’Anse Café” in downtown L’Anse from 1963 to 1968. She also ran an adult foster care business out of her home. She was employed at the Covington Rest Home as cook for 14 years until her retirement in 1992. Helen was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Covington, MI., and a life member of the Covington VFW Post 8945 Auxiliary. She enjoyed grouse hunting, fishing, working puzzles, and watching television game shows. Helen’s greatest joy was raising her granddaughters.
Mrs. Sliger is survived by her loving husband, Charles F., son, Charles J. (Tina) Sliger of Covington, grandchildren, Casey, Cierra, Caleb, and Seth, brothers, Clarence Tarvainen of Champion, MI., Robert (Mary) Tarvainen of Covington, sister, Marilyn Hatara of Georgia, uncle, Edsel Maki of Iron River, aunts, Vera Maki of Covington and Teressa Hermanson of Crystal Falls and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends Irene and Robby Younggren. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Sadie and Nancy.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sliger were held at 4 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2004 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Leon Linquist officiating. Interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery in the Spring. The family received friends on Friday from 2 p.m. until time of service. The Covington VFW Post 8945 Auxiliary conducted a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Following the services, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room located at the funeral home.
