HOWARD J. YOUNGGREN's Obituary
HOWARD J. “BUB” YOUNGGREN 83, of Covington, passed away Sunday, October 3 2004 at the Covington Rest Home following a lengthy illness. His family was at his side. He was born in Houghton, MI. on January 8, 1921 son of the late Howard and Mary (LaBelle) Younggren Sr. Howard attended school in Covington and was a lifetime resident. Howard was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy. On April 12, 1941, Howard married the former Irene Sailor in Covington. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington, and a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 144 in L’Anse. Howard was a maintenance superintendent at the Cleveland Cliff Mine for 17 years. He then worked as a self-employed logger until illness forced his retirement in 1999. Howard enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a skillful bumper pool player and had played throughout the area. He had a special love for working with the bulldozer doing earth-moving projects.
Mr. Younggren is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Irene, sons, Melvin (Karen) of Suisun City, CA and Robert (Shirley) Younggren of Covington, MI., 6 grandchildren 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, Francis (Helen) Younggren of Covington and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sisters Leila and Norma preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Younggren were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2004 from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington with Pastor Leon Linquist, officiating. Interment took place in the Covington Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. The Baraga County area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 held graveside military honors.
