HUBERT A. "HUBIE" KARVAKKO's Obituary
HUBERT ANDREW “HUBIE” KARVAKKO, 87, of Baraga passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010 peacefully at the Mather Nursing Center, Ishpeming with his bride of 63 years at his side. He was born in South Range, MI. on October 1, 1922 the son of the late August and Mary (Lumpus) Karvakko. Hubert attended Painesdale High School. He joined the Army in 1943. Hubert fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. He was wounded at the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart, a Victory Metal, American Theater Ribbon, European African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze 3 Battle Stars, and 2 Overseas Service Bars. He was very proud to have served his country. When he returned from the war he married Toini Sofia Hill in Tapiola, MI. on May 18, 1946. Hubert worked at the family store, Karvakko’s Market in Tapiola until he decided he would like to be a dairy farmer. He and Toini purchased a farm in Pelkie, where they farmed for 12 years. After farming he became a butcher for the Pelkie Co-op and later Fraki’s Market in L’Anse.
Hubert is survived by his loving wife Toini, a resident at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, daughter Mary Bergerson of Baraga, granddaughter Abigail (Benjamin) Manson of Marquette, and two great grandchildren George and Senia Manson of Marquette. He is also survived by sisters, Anita Sikorsky of L’Anse and Phelma (Robert) Jacobsen of Luray, VA., sister-in-law Viola Karvakko of Baraga and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. His good friends Paul Kaurala and Jean Perala of Marquette also survive. He was preceded in death by his sister Fern, brother Paul Karvakko, and son-in-law William Bergerson. Hubert is now reunited with his brother Paul in Heaven where they are plotting tricks to play on their mother, which they did so often in their younger years.
The family would like to thank the Mather Nursing Center, the Hemo-dialysis units of Portage Hospital and Marquette General Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.
A memorial service for Mr. Karvakko was held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2010 from Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor John Autio officiating. The family greeted friends at the church on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Military honors for Mr. Karvakko were conducted at the church on Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
