JOHN R. "JACK" HORNICK's Obituary
JOHN "JACK" R. HORNICK, 83, of Jurmu Rd., Baraga, passed away suddenly Monday, March 5, 2007 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L'Anse, MI. He was born in Houghton, MI. on December 4, 1923 son of the late Charles and Rose (Boehm) Hornick. Jack graduated from Houghton High School in 1942 and then attended Michigan Tech and graduated in 1950 with a Degree in Forestry. He served in the US Navy during WWII as an aviation ordinance man. On October 14, 1950 he married the former Marlyn Anderson at St. Ignatius Church in Houghton, MI. Jack was employed by the State of WI. in Tomahawk, worked for the Job Corp in Clam Lake, WI. and for Cliff Dow Chemical in Marquette for 2 years. After several other positions he was employed by the US Department of Agriculture in Washington DC from 1957 until his retirement in 1987. He and his family then returned to the UP. Jack and Marlyn owned and operated an antique shop called the "Country Shop" on Jurmu Road for 15 years. Jack was a member of the Society of American Foresters, the American Legion Post 144, L'Anse, and a former member of the Kiwanis. In 2000 Michigan Tech named him the Outstanding Alumnus of the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science and in 2001 he was elected to their honor Academy. He served as chairman on the Alberta Museum Board. Jack enjoyed tennis, playing baseball on the Old Timers League, refinishing antique furniture and taking walks with his dog, "Otto".
Mr. Hornick is survived by his loving wife, Marlyn, children, Karl (Zina) Hornick of Douglas, Wyoming, Steven (Peggy) Hornick of Appleton, WI., Kathleen Hornick of Baraga and Nancy (Roman) Butterfield of Stevens Point, WI., 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and sister, Charlotte Opie of Royal Oak, MI. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his son, John A. in 2005, and 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Funeral services for Mr. Hornick were held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Robert Wahmhoff officiating. Interment will take place in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Houghton, MI. The family received friends on Thursday, March 8, 2007 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse and for 1 hour prior to the service on Friday. A parish prayer service was held on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. Memorials in Jack's honor may be directed to Michigan Tech University Ford Forestry Center. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Following the service on Friday, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral home. The family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with arrangements.
