JOHN S. DECOTA's Obituary
JOHN S. DECOTA, 78, of Ontonagon, MI. passed away Friday, March 2, 2007 at Ontonagon Memorial Hospital. He was born in Assinins, MI. on February 2, 1929 son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Shalifoe) DeCota. John attended the Mission School in Assinins. He served in the US Army 101st Airborne division during the Korean Conflict. John was employed in the city of Milwaukee as a professional tree trimmer until his retirement. He returned to the area 2 years ago. John was a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
Mr. DeCota is survived by his son, George DeCota of L’Anse, stepdaughter, Gloria Shalifoe of L’Anse,k 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and sister, Josephine (Virgil) Binnion of Stevenville, MI. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, and 3 sisters.
A memorial service for Mr. DeCota was held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2007 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel with Father George Maki officiating. Interment will take place in the Assinins Cemetery. The family greeted friends on Monday from 2 p.m. until time of the service. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors Monday at the funeral chapel at 2:30 p.m.
