JOHN W. KINNUNEN's Obituary
JOHN W. KINNUNEN, 78, of Keweenaw Bay, MI. passed away Monday evening, September 11, 2006 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, L'Anse, where he had been a patient for a week. He was born in Hancock, MI. on March 16, 1928 son of the late William J. and Hazel (Isaacson) Kinnunen. John graduated from Baraga High School in 1945. He was a US Army veteran, assigned to the Service Company in Alaska. John was discharged from Fort Richardson, Alaska in 1949 with a rank of Corporal. He married the former Elvera Ahrens at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Frazier, MI. on August 7, 1954. John was a supervisor at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren, MI., retiring in 1987 with 35 years of service. He returned to the Keweenaw Bay area in 1993. John was a member of the Eagles Club of South Range. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed boating and fishing.
Mr. Kinnunen is survived by his loving wife, Elvera, daughters, Kim (Marie) Lamb of Chesterfield Twp., MI., and Sue (Duane) Rahood of New Haven, MI. , grandchild, Garrick Lamb of Baraga, great-grandchildren, Shelby and Haily, and niece, Leann. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley and brother, Tom.
Funeral services for Mr. Kinnunen were held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2006 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Interment will take place in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The family received friends on Thursday evening, September 14, 2006 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service & Chapel and 1 hour prior to the service on Friday. Directly following the service on Friday, friends were invited to join the family for fellowship and luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral home. Baraga county area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct military honors at the cemetery on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Memorials in Mr. Kinnunen's honor may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. The family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with arrangements.
