I was just thinking about how important it is for young people to learn to judge others by their character and choose their closest friends from among those who are kind. Over the years, as I thought about that issue, the example I always remembered was a student in one of my classes at Wheeling High School, named Jon Lemerande. When he came to mind once again, I googled his name only to discover that he passed away just 2 weeks ago. He probably wouldn't remember me but my 5 children have all grown up hearing about him as an example of someone who had grown past the selfishness of childhood much sooner than most of his peers. I pray that Jon is resting in the arms of Jesus with joy in his heart.
