LILY S. URPILA's Obituary
LILY S. URPILA, 90, of L'Anse and formerly of Covington, passed away Sunday, April, 11, 2010, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. She had been a resident there for several years. She was born in Watton, MI. on September 27, 1919 the daughter of the late August and Fanny (Niemi) Maki. Lily graduated from Kenton High School in 1938. On May 11, 1946 she married Otto Urpila at the Finnish Ev. Lutheran parsonage in Trout Creek, MI. He preceded her in death on August 12, 2007. Lily was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Covington and the Covington VFW Auxiliary Post 8945. She enjoyed cooking, watching birds and planting flowers.
Mrs. Urpila is survived by her loving son James (Helen) Urpila of Keweenaw Bay, brothers Glenn (Betty) Maki, and Ray (Cindy) Maki both of Covington, sisters Violet Autio of Watton, and Fern Tilson of L'Anse. Several nieces and nephews also survive along with her special friend Peggy Vervisch. She was preceded in death by her brother Norman, sisters Sadie Hutula and Donna Laundy.
Funeral services for Mrs. Urpila were held 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 from Bethany Lutheran Church, Covington with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Interment took place in the Covington Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Wednesday from 11 a.m until the time of the service. A VFW Auxiliary service was conducted at the church at 11:45 a.m. Following the services, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the church. Memorials in Mrs. Urpila's honor may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church.
