MARY S. HONKALA's Obituary
Mary Sofia Honkala, 91, of Kaleva, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at Orchard Hill AFC Home in Brethren. She was born January 22, 1916, in Kaleva, the daughter of John and Naima (Eskonsipo) Rajala. On November 16, 1940, in Detroit, Mary married Wilho M. Honkala, of Pelkie, Michigan, who preceded her in death in 1981. They lived in Detroit and Kaleva before moving to Pelkie where they operated a dairy farm until the mid 1950’s. They moved to Detroit where Mary worked for the National Bank of Detroit as teller, general teller, and assistant branch manager for 20 years before retiring to Kaleva.
Mary is survived by her son John (Margaret) Honkala, a grandson Matthew (Suzanne) Honkala, two sisters and a brother. Mary was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; 3 sisters; and 1 brother.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2007, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home, in Kaleva, with Pastor Donald Stroup officiating. Interment will be in the Pelkie Cemetery in the spring. Visitation was held Friday from 11 a.m. until time of the services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Spring interment arrangements will be announced by the Reid Funeral Services and Chapel, L’Anse.
