MICHAEL L. SOUTH's Obituary
MICHAEL L. SOUTH, age 57, of L’Anse, passed away Monday, August 9, 2004 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Michael had been ill for several years. He was born in Lima, Ohio on April 30, 1947 son of the late Edgar and Freida (Fett) South. Michael graduated from Cridersville High School in Ohio in 1965. He attended Michigan Tech. University, obtaining an Associate Degree. He served in the US Navy as a sonar operator aboard the USS Kennedy. Michael married the former Lynn Phillips in L’Anse on September 8, 1973. He was employed as a paint operator for the Celotex Corp. for 26 year. He retired in 1999 due to ill health. Michael was a member of the L’Anse American Legion Post 144 where he held various posts. He was also a member of the N.R.A., and I.A.M His hobbies included, hunting, fishing and hiking. He also coached baseball.
Michael is survived by his loving wife; Lynn, son; Philip of Allendale, MI., brother; Melvin (Pam) South of Wapakoneta, Ohio, special sister-in-law; Janet Maanika and special friend; Tom Lindgren. Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill.
A Memorial Service for Michael was held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2004 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Judy Mattson officiating. The family received friends on Friday, August 13, 2004 from 12:00 noon until time of the service. A military honor service was conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, under the direction of Baraga County Area Veterans. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with arrangements.
