Nancy Sue Menard's Obituary
SSG Nancy Sue Menard USA Retired, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Bayside Village, L’Anse. She was born April 4, 1941, the 2nd child and only daughter of the late June V. (nee Olson) and Curtis C. Menard in L’Anse, MI.
Nancy graduated from L’Anse High School in 1959. She earned her Associates of Arts degree from the University of MN in 1963, LPN from New York University in 1978; a BA from Marquette University, in 1981. She traveled and worked throughout the U.S. visiting Alaska, California, Washington, North Carolina, Mississippi, Canada, Puerto Rico, Kenya and Honduras. Nancy’s work career was varied: having worked as a waitress, a telephone operator, a secretary, a legal secretary, operating room technician, Licensed Practical Nurse and substitute teacher in WI. She had returned to L’Anse in 2013 and lived with her father.
Having served in several U.S. Reserve components, she retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant. During Operation Desert Strom, from February to April 1991, she was assigned to Department of Nursing, Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonia, TX. Nancy was authorized the Army Service Ribbon, the national Defense Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster) and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon.
Nancy is survived by her brothers Philip “Ritchie” (Joyce) Menard, L’Anse and Jim Menard, Nome, AK, sisters in law Virginia Menard, L’Anse, Linda Gouins Menard Post, Wasilla AK and Joyce F. Menard, L’Anse, numerous nieces, nephews and three foster sons in WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Larry C. Menard of L’Anse, MI and Dr. Curtis D. Menard, of Wasilla, AK, nephews Michael Menard, L’Anse, MI, Dr. Curtis C. Menard, Wasilla, AK and John Menard, Fairbanks, AK.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Reverend Steve Rhoades officiating. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service. Baraga County area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 conducted military honors at the funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following the memorial service, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, locate at the funeral chapel.
Interment took place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
