PHILIP R. "FLAPPER" SAUVOLA's Obituary
Philip R. “Flapper” Sauvola, age 78, of Baraga, passed away Thursday evening, October 9, 2014 at Bayside Village, L’Anse following an illness of several months. He was born in Chassell, MI on May 29, 1936 the son of the late Vinor and Mary Sauvola. Flapper graduated from Chassell High School in 1956. Following high school he served in the US Navy. On December 1, 1962 he married the former Doane Ellenich at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2012. Flapper had worked at Celotex Corp. in L’Anse as an electrician until his retirement in 2001. He was a 20 year member of the Baraga Fire Department, retiring in 1993. Flapper enjoyed hunting, having an “Old Milwaukee”, going to camp and staying at “The Bus”
Mr. Sauvola is survived by his loving family; children Rick (Annette) Sauvola of Pardeville, WI, Dale (Tammy) Sauvola of Baraga and Stacy (Ryan) Tikkanen of L’Anse, grandchildren Cassie (Jeff), Amanda (Mike), Zack, Kaitlin (Alan), Brittany, Madisson, Kimberly, Max and Brayden, great grandchildren Morgan, Peyton, Taylor, Lyndsey, Daelynn and Alexyss, sister Mary Ann Sauvola Mills of California. Flapper is also survived by a brother–in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and former daughter-in-law Julie. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doane, daughter Kim in 1992, and 2 brothers Jacob and Robert.
A memorial funeral service was held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Baraga Fire Department conducted their service at 11 a.m. followed by Baraga County area veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducting military honors at 11:30 a.m. Following the services, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the Baraga American Legion Post 444.
Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery.
