RICHARD D. GALER's Obituary
RICHARD D. GALER, 77, of Zeba, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for 2 days. He was born in Highland Park, MI. on June 17, 1926 son of the late William and Naomi (Cournoyer) Galer. Dick attended Detroit area schools. He married the former Elizabeth Miller in Detroit on February 15, 1947. He served as a coxswain in the US Navy during WWII. Dick was employed at Ford Motor Co. in Wixom. He worked in the maintenance department for US Airlines in Romulus until his retirement. He was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Church, Assinins, the Yankton Sioux Indian Tribe in South Dakota, and was a member of the Am Vets. Dick enjoyed making Indian crafts, attending Pow-Wows and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Galer is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth, sons, Foster (Kim) Galer of Baraga, Robert Galer of L’Anse, daughters, Rosemary Lamberger of Garden City, MI., Gloria Galer of Ontonagon, Margaret (Peter) MacDonald of Rochester Hills, MI., Diane (James) Czech of Harper Woods, MI., and Doreen (Irvin) Smith of L’Anse, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and sister, Joyce Brouilette of Walled Lake, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Jr., sister, Gloria Rogers, and 2 grandsons, Ronny Dee, and Darren.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated for Mr. Galer at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2004 from Holy Name of Jesus Church, Assinins with Father Greg Heikkala officiating. Interment took place in the Evergreen Cemetery, L’Anse. The family received friends on Thursday, May 6, 2004 from 5 until 9 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse and 1 hour prior to the Mass on Friday. Parish prayers were offered Thursday evening at the funeral chapel at 7:30 p.m. followed by military honors at 8 p.m. under the direction of the American Legion Post 444, Baraga. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
