Robert W. "Racing Bob" Baxter's Obituary
Robert W. Baxter--known to most as "Racing Bob" ran his last race on January 27, 2026 at UP Health System, Marquette. He was 87 years old, which is a good long stretch of road if you’re lucky enough to travel it with your eyes open.
Bob retired from Celotex, but retirement didn’t slow him down much. He served on the Arvon Township Board and the Fire Department for 12 years, the kind of work you do because it needs doing. He liked hunting and fishing, liked three-wheeling, and liked sitting with friends over a few beers, back when days felt longer and nights didn’t ask so much of you. In those younger days, you might have found him at the Night Owl or the Hilltop, where stories were traded, laughter came easy, and nobody was in much of a hurry to leave.
He lived a good life, which is the best thing any of us can say when the lights go out. He leaves behind his wife, Donna (Erickson) Baxter; his stepdaughter, Michelle Lee LeClair of New Mexico; and his son, Kraig Baxter of Skanee. He also leaves behind his dog, Persey, who claimed the bed as his own and never quite let Bob forget it.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at BCMH and UP Health System, and to all those who went the extra mile when it mattered most.
A private family service will be held at a late date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid Funeral Service and Chapel.
