ROBERT F. "BOB" KANGAS's Obituary
ROBERT F. "BOB" KANGAS, 65, of L'Anse passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born August 20, 1938 in Baraga, MI. son of the late Carl and Selma (Waltanen) Kangas. Bob graduated from John A. Doelle School in Tapiola, MI. in 1957, and then attended Suomi College for 1 year. He married the former Sharon Haanpaa in L'Anse on August 29, 1959. Bob was employed by Upper Peninsula Power Company for 20 years as a turbine engineer. He retired in 1995. Following retirement, Bob worked at Winkler's Nursing Home in L'Anse as a resident transporter. He was also a sports referee for over 20 years. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, L'Anse and the Otter Lake Sportsman's Club in Tapiola. He enjoyed baseball, golfing, hunting, and fishing. Bob’s greatest joy was spending time with his faithful companion, Reggie at his camp in Tapiola.
Mr. Kangas is survived by his loving wife, Sharon, children; David (Connie) Kangas of Ishpeming, MI., Janet (Frank) Supanich of L'Anse, mother-in-law, Selma Haanpaa of L'Anse, grandchildren; Casey, Kristen, Shae, Brandon, and adopted granddaughter, Jenny; several step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren, brothers; Melvin Kangas and Ken (Sharon) Kangas both of Tapiola, sister; Judy (Dave) Stefanic of Turner, MI. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Holly Marie Sullivan in 1985 and his father-in-law in 1997.
Funeral services for Mr. Kangas were held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2003 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Leon Linquist officiating. Interment took place in the Evergreen Cemetery, L'Anse. The family received friends on Saturday, September 27, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. until time of service. Following the service, friends were invited to join the family for fellowship and refreshments in the Harrington Gathering room located at the funeral home.
