ROBERT M. JOHNSON's Obituary
ROBERT M. JOHNSON, 91, of Toivola, MI. passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Bayside Village, L’Anse following a lengthy illness. He was born in Hancock, MI. on September 23, 1914 son of the late Fred and Kate (Kyllonen) Johnson. Robert attended school in Hancock and Detroit. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 as a Motor Machinist. Robert married the former Helmi Kangas in 1952. She preceded him in death on March 1, 1987. He worked in Detroit for the United States Lakes Survey Corps of Engineers. Robert later was a motorboat operator and then was a tugboat captain throughout the Great Lakes. In 1979 Bob was voted Boater of the Year and had the distinction of visiting every port in the Great Lakes. He was a member of United Lutheran Church, L’Anse and had belonged to the VFW Post 5112 in Dearborn, MI.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his loving children, Karl (Doris) Johnson of Toivola, MI., and Kurt Johnson of Dearborn, MI., grandchildren, Jessica, Jimmy, Billy, and Emily. Nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Interment will take place in the Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock, MI. The family received friends at the funeral chapel on Tuesday from 11 am until time of the service. Baraga County Area Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors for Mr. Johnson at 12 noon. Following the services, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and luncheon at the Harrington Gathering room, located at the funeral home.
