ROBERT J. VAN CLEVE's Obituary
ROBERT J. VAN CLEVE, 40, of L’Anse, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Lansing, MI. on June 12, 1963, with a severe physical handicap, yet never once in over forty years did he accept the option of “quit”. He was the firstborn son of George and Lucretia (Marks) Van Cleve. He was a beloved son who consistently radiated warmth, good humor and an exemplary Christian spirit until called home after enduring a lifetime of affliction. Bob collected many videos and recordings of Gospel music, and spent many hours listening to them along with his Louis L’Amour audio tapes and other western adventures. The Dallas Cowboys had no bigger fan. Among his mementos, Bob was fondest of the prayers, warm notes and photos from friends, including celebrities, that he had sent inspirational music tapes to in their times of trial. Bob was as tender hearted, especially toward the handicapped and needy, as anyone who ever walked this earth. He never once passed up an opportunity to volunteer help in any way that he was able. Even though most physical requirements were beyond his ability, he would nevertheless pray for those in need. He was no small inspiration to many as they came to appreciate him and the afflictions he labored under. Yet Bob maintained a smile that would light up an entire room. As a result, he made lasting friends whereever he went. In addition to his trust in Christ's salvation, Bob's sensitivity to handicaps was reflected in his favorite Scripture verses: I Samuel 16.7: The Lord said unto Samuel, look not on (Saul's) countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. I Peter 4.19: Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to Him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. Psalm 119.11: Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. II Peter 5.7: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Bob's favorite hymn, The Old Rugged Cross, was another reminder of his tenderness toward suffering. He is sorely missed by his parents, and dear friend and brother, Douglas. Bob was preceded by his younger brother, Bill, and both sets of grandparents, who will all welcome him to Heaven. "Bob leaves us with hearts full of sweet memories and a longing for family reunions on the other side. We love you, Bob; Son, Brother, and Friend. We will never, never forget the joy and inspiration that you have graced our family with. We are richer for it, and now, Heaven is richer too."
In addition to his parents and brother, Bob is also survived by 1 aunt, 1 great aunt, 1 uncle and several cousins.
