ROSE M. MATHES's Obituary
ROSE M. MATHES, 89 of L'Anse, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for 5 days. She was born in South Range, MI on February 17, 1919 the daughter of the late Herman and Jenni (Niemi) Alatalo. Rose married John W. Jestila in 1936 and he preceded her in death on October 27, 1960. She then married Donald Mathes in 1963 and he preceded her in death in 1993. Rose graduated from high school in 1976. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church, the L'Anse VFW Auxiliary, and the Martha Circle. Rose enjoyed cooking, baking, and helped make pasties at the VFW. She was an avid walker. Rose also enjoyed traveling, shopping and gardening. She loved to be with her family and friends. Rose especially loved the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her beautiful smile and contagious laughter will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Mathes is survived by her loving children, Daryl (Sylvia) Jestila of L'Anse, Paul (Patricia) Jestila of Blue Springs, MO, Terry (Jaunita) Jestila of Blue Springs, MO, Darlene Smith of Carrollton, TX., Jennifer Patterson of Independence, MO., Linda (Mark) Massie of Baraga, Judy (Armando) Balber of Carrollton, TX., and Betty Knights of Jenison, MI., step-children, Linda Perry of Chassell, Judy (Mike) Sullivan of Alston, and Fredrick Mathes of Hancock, 27 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and sister, Mary Ann Keranen of Alston. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by 1 son, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mathes were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2008 from United Lutheran Church, L'Anse with Pastor Scott Williams officiating. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse from 6 until 8 p.m. and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Her grandchildren honored her as casket bearers.
