Russell W. Tarvainen's Obituary
Russell W. Tarvainen, age 83 of Watton, MI passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, May 17, 2021. Russell was born in Covington, MI on June 5, 1937 the son of the late August and Elna (Salli) Tarvainen. He graduated from L’Anse High School in 1955. On July 6, 1957 he married the former Arlene Syrjala in Covington. She preceded him in death in 2020. Russell had been employed as a truck driver for Baraga County Road Commission, retiring in 1997. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Covington and had served on the church council as president for many years, was a member of the church choir and the Trinity Men’s League. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, puzzles, and was an avid reader and deer hunter.
Russell is survived by his loving children Kris Tarvainen of Watton, Becky Tarvainen of Stillwater, MN and Beth Ann Tappy of Gainesville, FL, grandchildren Ryan (Tina) Tappy, Eric (Kyla) Tappy and Emily Tappy, great grandchildren Zoe, Natalie, Cecily and Cole Tappy. Numerous nieces, nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Arlene, son-in-law Tom Tappy, brother and sister-in-law Rodney (Gail) Tarvainen and brother-in-law Michael Syrjala.
A funeral service for Russell and memorial service for his wife Arlene will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10 am. until the time of the services. Immediately following the services, a private family interment will take place in the Covington Cemetery and the family requests friends to remain at the church for fellowship and a luncheon upon the family’s return.
