SARA B. DRENNAN's Obituary
SARA BONDE DRENNAN, 72, of Baraga, passed away Saturday morning, September 13, 2003 in Copper Harbor following a 6-month battle with lung cancer. She was born in Glen Ellyn, IL. of proud Swedish heritage, on February 11, 1931 daughter of the late A.A. and Isabel (Cross) Bonde. Sara graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1949 and went on to study education at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, reflecting her great love of literature and teaching. For three years she taught elementary English and Art at Marquardt Elementary School. On September 8, 1961, in Oak Park, IL. she married fellow teacher John Charles Drennan of South Beverly Hills, IL. They moved to the Copper Country in the fall of 1970. Sara was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga County Family Independence Agency Board, Baraga County jury board, member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She had served as president/secretary of Copper Country N.O.W. She had also been a local library volunteer. Sara and John loved the area and raised their 5 children, spending summers vacationing in Copper Harbor and Door County, WI. Sara loved being a mother and grandmother, always putting the needs of her family before her own. “Nothing should be prized more highly than the value of each day.” By Goethe, was a favorite quote. She loved life and the people in her life were blessed with that love that she never grew tired of giving. She loved to travel and in 2000 happily visited her Scandinavian homeland.
Mrs. Drennan is survived by her husband of 42 years, John, sons; James (Terie) Drennan of Western Springs, IL., John Jr. Drennan of Edina, MN, daughters; Linda Drennan of Naperville, IL, Johanna (Nick) Koszykowski of Dodgeville, MI., Janet Drennan of Houghton, MI. grandchildren; Darren, Elizabeth, Emily, Grace, brother; Jim Bonde of Glen Ellyn, IL, sisters, Jane Collins of Morton Grove, IL, and Joyce Paradise of Oak Park, IL. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by a brother.
A memorial service for Mrs. Drennan was held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Judy Mattson officiating. The Order of the Eastern Star conducted a service at 12:30 p.m. The family received friends on Wednesday from 12:00 noon until time of service. Following the services, friends were invited to join the family for fellowship and luncheon in the Harrington Gathering room located at the funeral home.
