SARAH A. HEIKKINEN's Obituary
SARAH A. HEIKKINEN, age 83, of L’Anse, passed away Monday, July 11, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 13, 1928 the daughter of the late Oscar and Margaret (Slusher) Parker. Sarah attended schools in Indianapolis as well as worked in a printing shop. She married Harold Heikkinen in Indianapolis on March 18, 1952. In 1955 she began a long career with the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff, retiring in 1986. Sarah was a member of United Lutheran Church, L’Anse, the Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Post #144 Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, bowling, collecting cookbooks, playing cards, music, and crocheting.
Sarah loved her family. She thought the world of, and had a special relationship with all her grandchildren. Not being one to mince words, Sarah said what she meant, and meant what she said. Her strength and generous spirit will never be forgotten.
Mrs. Heikkinen is survived by her loving husband Harold, children Glen (Tina) Heikkinen of Somerset, CA, Dennis (Jenny) Heikkinen of L’Anse, daughters Connie (James) Davidson of Escanaba, and Cindy Jo (Jim) Wheeler of Hancock, grandchildren Tammy, Tracy, Chad, Andria, Sarah, Jacob, Zachary, and Shane, great grandchildren Kyle, Nikki, Madison, and great-great grandchild Hailee. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her grandson Joshua in May 2011, as well as 1 brother, and 3 sisters.
A memorial service for Mrs. Heikkinen was held at 1 pm Saturday, July 23, 2011 from United Lutheran Church, L’Anse with Pastor John Autio officiating. The family received friends on Friday, July 22, 2011 from 6 until 8 pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A Eastern Star service was held Friday evening at 7 p.m..
