Shirley Mavis Hulkonen's Obituary
Shirley Mavis Hulkonen, age 84, a resident of Nisula went peacefully home to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 18, 2016. Shirley was born on June 4, 1932 to the late Charles and Helen (Victor) Kemppainen of Alston. She graduated from Baraga High School in 1950. Shirley married Edward Hulkonen on September 20, 1952 at the Laurium Apostolic Lutheran Church Parsonage. Shirley and Ed raised four children as they farmed the Hulkonen Homestead for 39 years, retiring in 1996. Shirley was an active member of her community. She was a member of the Alston Apostolic Lutheran Church, the Doelle Senior Citizens and the Kountry Kutie Red Hats.
Shirley is survived by her husband, three daughters Colleen (Phil) Creech of Marquette, Valerie (Gary) Valine of Superior, WI and Mavis (Phil) Luurtsema of Saline, MI, one son Edward (Anita) Hulkonen Jr. of Nisula, 14 grandchildren Sara (Bill) Lautner of Minden City, MI, Rachel (Derek) Koltvedt of Marquette, Hannah Creech of DesMoines, IA, Ruth (Cole) Fennessey of Stuart, IA, Adam (Erinn) Valine of St. Paul, MN, Anna Valine of Bloomington, MN, Joshua Hulkonen of Scranton, PA, Jason (Kendra) Hulkonen of Atlantic Mine, Rebecca and Lindsey Hulkonen of Atlantic Mine, Alina, Amanda, Allison and Andrea Luurtsema of Saline, MI, 6 great grandchildren Allison and Trenton Lautner, Autumn and Elet Koltvedt and Abigail and Alex Fennessey. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Fay Kemppainen and Dottie Kemppainen. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ruth (Aimo) Hulkonen and four brothers Paul (Carol) Kemppainen, Donald Kemppainen, Kenneth (Virginia) Kemppainen and David Kemppainen.
Funeral services for Shirley were held at 12 pm Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor Earl Kaurala officiating. The family greeted friends at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 10 am until time of the service. Immediately following the funeral service, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral chapel.
Interment took place in the Nisula Cemetery.
