SYLVIA E. JACOBY's Obituary
Sylvia Elfreda Jacoby age 97 of L’Anse passed away peacefully Sunday June 29, 2014 at Bayside Village Nursing Home where she had been a resident for almost one year. Sylvia was born February 19, 1917 in Calumet, Michigan. She was the daughter of the late John Frederick Jokipii and Evi Amanda (Storm) Jokipii. Sylvia moved to Pelkie as a child and attended the Pelto one room school house. She graduated from Baraga High School in 1934 and just celebrated her 80th class reunion. She worked as a book keeper for Schick Service Inc. for two years and at Burroughs Corp (now Unisys) for 34 years. Sylvia retired in 1977 as an Executive Secretary having started as a clerk/typist. Sylvia was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. She was also a member of the Sturgeon Valley Historical Society, Doelle Senior Citizens, and Baragaland Senior Citizens. Sylvia enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and visiting with family and friends. Sylvia also traveled extensively throughout the United States as well as a trip to Finland with her mother. Surviving are nephews Fred Jacoby of Stuart, Florida, Dennis Jokipii of L’Anse, Kurt (Melanie) Jokipii of Plant City, Florida and Kevin (Marie) Jokipii of Centerline, Michigan, nieces Diane (Jim) Grigsby of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jonelle (Tim) Pope of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Lisa (Mike) Giddings of Baraga and Susan(Roger) Copley of L’Anse as well as several great nephews, great nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers; Fred, Reuben, Ralph, Edsel, and Gordon, one sister Connie, and niece-in-law Helen.
A funeral service was held at 11 am on Thursday July 3, 2014 at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie with Pastor Bill Chapel officiating. The family greeted friends on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment took place in the Pelkie Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. A luncheon followed at the church.
