TOINI SOFIA HILL KARVAKKO's Obituary
Toini Sofia Hill Karvakko age 90, passed away peacefully October 27, 2014, in the presence of her daughter and granddaughter at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, MI.
Toini was born on January 12, 1924 in Tapiola, MI., one of eight children of Herman and Louisa (Mourtoniemi) Hill.
She attended the John Doelle school in Tapiola, quitting at age 16 to care for her brothers and father and maternal grandparents after her mother passed away. As she aged into her late 80's she was amazed at how long she had lived.
Toini married Hubert Karvakko on May 18, 1946 in Tapiola. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2010.
She worked as a nurse aide at Baraga County Memorial Hospital for many years.
She belonged to Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Elo, MI. She taught Sunday School for many years. Toini had a deep Christian faith. At her passing she was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie.
Toini was a member of the Alston VFW Auxilary. She was part of their pasty making team.
Toini is survived by her daughter, Mary Bergerson of Baraga, MI., granddaughter Abigail Manson of Marquette, MI. and two great grandchildren George Manson and Senia Manson of Marquette. Also surviving are her sister in laws: Antoinette Hill of Cudahy, WI., Florence Hill of Houghton, MI., Anita Sikorsky of L'Anse, MI., Phelma Jacobsen of Luray, VA. and Viola Karvakko of Baraga, MI. Her best friend from childhood, Elsie Autio, survives. Preceding her in death were siblings Alvin (twin brother), Toivo John, Jacob, Onni, Waino and Oliver Hill, one sister Helmi Pietila, and son in law William Bergerson and grandson in law, Benjamin Manson.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Mather Nursing Center for their tender loving care, especially during the last 3 months. We would also like to thank Lake Superior Hospice.
A memorial service is planned for the spring of 2015.
