WARD B. BARNES's Obituary
WARD B. BARNES, 78, of L’Anse, MI. passed away Friday, April 6, 2007 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness. Ward was born June 22, 1928 in L’Anse, son of the late Alex and Charlotte (LaBar) Barnes. The family moved to the Detroit area when Ward was 5 years old. He attended school in Detroit and was employed as a carpenter in home construction until his retirement in 1981. Returning to the L’Anse area, Ward provided maintenance services for several local businesses, was a caller for the VFW Bingo games and was a member of the bowling league. During the Korean War, Ward honorably served in the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the L’Anse VFW Post 3897.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his ½ brother John J. (Jean) Barnes of Nashville, TN. and sister Debra Witkowski of Wilmington, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and several cousins in the L’Anse area. Special friends Roxanne and Curt Wanhatalo and Derek are also among his survivors.
Funeral services for Ward were held Monday, April 9,2007 at 7 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with Pastor John Henry officiating. Interment will take place in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral chapel on Monday from 6 until 7 p.m. where military honors were accorded at 6:30 p.m. under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444. Following the services, friends were invited to join the family for refreshments and fellowship in the Harrington Gathering Room, located at the funeral home.
