ALBERT E. "AL" HEINO's Obituary
ALBERT E. "AL" HEINO, 88, of Baraga, MI., passed away Sunday July 22, 2007 at Bayside Village after a lengthy illness. He was born in Ishpeming on March 8, 1919 son of the late Elmer and Aina (Maki) Heino. Al attended Ishpeming Public Schools thru 8th grade and graduated from L'Anse High School in 1938. He then attended and graduated from Suomi College (Finlandia) in 1952. Al earned a Bachelor of Science from Northern Michigan University and a Masters Degree from University of Michigan in 1960. He joined the US Army in May 1941 and was involved in the Pacific Theater Operations. Al married the former Wanda Sharp on April 11, 1960 in Shelbyville, TN. He was employed as a social studies and history teacher in Baraga and Two Rivers, WI. He returned to the UP as the principal of Mass City School and later the principal of the Baraga High School. He retired in 1985. Al had served as mayor of L'Anse, was a member of the L'Anse American Legion Post 144 and the L’Anse VFW. He was a former member and president of Baraga Lions Club, Kiwanis, the Copper Country Principals Roundtable and retired Teacher’s Association. Al was an avid reader, especially the Civil War and World War II studies, and enjoyed working on a variety of "projects".
Mr. Heino is survived by his loving wife, Wanda, son, Jeffrey A. (Anne) Heino of Spread Eagle, WI., daughter, Lisa Lynn Meade of Miami, FL. three grandchildren, Abagail, Jared, and Samantha, and a brother, Rudy (Alice) Heino of St. Clair Shores, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Lori Ann, and his sister, Mavis Neva.
Family services for Mr. Heino were held at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse.
