ALICE L. TANGEN's Obituary
ALICE L. TANGEN, 75, of Baraga, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday evening April 25, 2006 at Portage Health System in Hancock. She was born in L’Anse, MI. on February 26, 1931 daughter of the late J. Oliver and Nettie (Bye) Paquette. Alice graduated from L’Anse High School in 1949. On September 1, 1951, she married Elmer Kinnunen in Chicago. Alice and Elmer resided in Chicago for several years, then came home to Baraga to raise their family. Elmer passed away suddenly on December 26, 1966 in L’Anse. Alice raised their six children with the support of family and friends. On November 8, 1969, G. Henry Tangen married Alice and soon became parents of a new son, Bruce. Alice was very active in the community, serving on the Altar Society at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. She was a Lady of the Alter, responsible for the flowers and the altar linens. Alice also taught Catechism for the church. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was happiest when she had a houseful of company to attend to. Alice also enjoyed growing flowers and sharing beauty of nature with her great grandchildren. She played cards with her Pinochle Club for many years. Alice also liked to work cross word puzzles and to crochet mittens for her many grandchildren.
Mrs. Tangen is survived by her loving husband, Henry, children, Christine Downes of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Richard E. (Stephanie Free) Kinnunen, of Frisco, Texas; Timothy J. (Jane Kovala) Kinnunen, of Watton, MI; Thomas R. (Janet Miller-Marshall) Kinnunen; Laurel K Kinnunen of Baraga, MI.; Linda M (Steve) Wood, of Eagle River, WI., Bruce A. (Theresa Seymour) Tangen of Alston, MI.; her siblings Leroy F. Paquette, of Merrill, WI.; Virginia M. (Bernard) Penokie, of L’Anse, MI.; Patricia A. (Dennis) Lane, of L’Anse, MI.; twelve grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren’ and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Kenneth A. Paquette, Ralph O. Paquette, John M. Paquette, and Beatrice M. Sundquist.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father George Maki, celebrant. The family received friends at the church on Saturday from 10 am until time of the Mass at noon. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. Following the interment, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and luncheon in St. Ann’s Church Hall. The family has entrusted the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse with funeral arrangements.
