CALVIN E. LEPPANEN's Obituary
CALVIN E. LEPPANEN, SR., 87, of Baraga, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Portage Health, Hancock, MI. He was born in Marquette, MI. on January 6, 1925 the son of the late Manuel and Jenny (Autio) Leppanen. He graduated from Pierce High School in Marquette, MI. Calvin served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He married the former Gloria Kinnunen in Wisconsin on November 22, 1952. Calvin had been employed as a machine operator for the former Celotex Corp. L’Anse, until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga, lifetime member of Chassell VFW Post #6507, International Woodworkers Union, was a Boy Scout Leader, and a former member of the Lions Club. Calvin loved to read, especially history books, was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed playing baseball and playing cards.
Mr. Leppanen is survived by his loving wife Gloria, son Calvin E. Leppanen of Baraga, daughters Judith (Brent) Nelson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Susan Leppanen of Baraga, and Jane (John Lasanen) Kinnunen of Chassell, grandchildren Suzanne, Ivy, Alyssa, Gabriel, Maija, Kevin, Janelle, and Kendall, 8 great grandchildren, brothers Arnold Leppanen of Marquette, and Kayko (Nancy) Leppanen of Hollis, N.H., and sister Irma Neumann of Rhinelander, WI. Numerous nieces, nephews and other family members also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Leppanen were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012 from Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Baraga with Pastor John Autio. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday at the church from 1 until the time of the service. Military honors were conducted at the church on Sunday following the funeral service.
