EVELYN E. BERGERSON's Obituary
EVELYN E. BERGERSON, 82, of Baraga, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Bayside Village, L'Anse where she had been a resident for several months. She was born in Nisula, MI.on January 19, 1927 the daughter of the late Matt and Martha (Niemi) Saari. Evelyn moved to the Detroit area in 1943 and graduated from Redford High School in Redford, MI. in1945. She worked for various companies in the Detroit area before returning to Baraga in 1955. Evelyn married George Bergerson at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga on June 11, 1955. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2001. Evelyn was a customer service representative at Baraga Telephone for 41 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga, and the Baraga American Legion Auxiliary Post 444 where she was a past president. Evelyn was honored as the American Legion Auxiliary volunteer of the year for the U.P. District. She was an active member of the Red Hatters. Evelyn had also been honored as the homemaker of the year at the Baraga County Fair. She was also a volunteer for the Senior Citizens TRAID group and a tireless volunteer for various other organizations in the area. Evelyn enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, and baking.
Mrs. Bergerson is survived by her loving sister, Verna (Tom) Ross of Pelkie, brother-in-law Oliver Maki of L'Anse and sister-in-law Gladys Saari of South Lyon, MI. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Irene, Walfred, Gladys, Wallace, Shirley, and Eugene.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 12 noon on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga with Father John Longbucco and Father Norm Clisch, con-celebrants. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse and at the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The American Legion Auxiliary conducted a service Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at the funeral chapel and a parish prayer service was held at 7 p.m. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests memorials to be directed to St. Vincent DePaul Society.
