JOSEPH G. STEVENS's Obituary
JOSEPH GEORGE STEVENS, age 70, of L’Anse, passed away Saturday, March, 22, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born in Wakefield, MI on February 25, 1944, the son of the late Sheldon and Samanthia (Metoxen) Stevens. Joe graduated from high school and attended University of Wisconsin in Stevens Pointe. He served in the United States Navy. Joe married the former Shirley Picciano in Baraga on March 4, 1995. He had been employed by BHK Child Development Board as a bus driver until his retirement. Joe was a member of Wisconsin Oneida Tribe, and the Baraga American Legion Post #444. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, was an avid Green Bay Packer and Cubs fan, loved listening to Shania Twain, and frequenting the L’Anse VFW Club. He had a good sense of humor, and his favorite saying was “Call the Cops”.
Mr. Stevens is survived by his loving wife Shirley, son Ross (Bobbie Joe) Jaukkuri of Baraga, daughters Antoinette (Wes) Stevens of Iron River, WI, and Michelle Picciano (Susan Nobel) of Hibbing, MN, grandchildren Marissa and Ross Jr., brother Simon (Bernice) Stevens of Aberdeen, SD, and sisters Essie Mae Stevens of Green Bay, Karla (Bob) Sunn of Rapid River, MI, and Patricia (Harlan) King of Oneida, WI. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by brothers Fredrick, Edward, and Dexter, and sisters Nancy Lou, Shirley Jean, and Debra.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 11 am at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L’Anse. Visitation took place from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Area veterans, under the direction of American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. Interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. Following the funeral services, the family invited friends to join them for fellowship and a luncheon at the Ojibwa Senior Citizen Center, Baraga.
