ROBERT E. TURUNEN's Obituary
ROBERT E. TURUNEN, age 87, a recent resident of the Bluffs in Houghton passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Houghton County Medical Care Facility, Hancock. He was born in Nisula on July 13, 1924 the son of the late Andrew and Lydia (Milli) Turunen. Robert graduated from Baraga High School in 1942 and then enlisted in the Army, serving in the 44th and 70th Infantry Division in the European Theater until 1946. Robert then attended the University of Michigan and received a BA in Economics and MBA in Marketing and Finance in 1952. He began his employment with Chrysler Corporation before moving to the General Motors Research Laboratories where he worked as a Senior Research analyst, retiring in 1964. In 1967 Robert started his own investment company in Detroit from which he retired in 1986. He moved back to the family farm in Nisula and then moved to the Bluffs in 2005. Mr. Turunen is survived by his nieces Lisa Stilson, Cindy Goodman, Julie Turunen Grant, Suzanne Paul, and Amy Turunen, his sister-in-law Ethel Turunen, and other family members. He was preceded in death by his brothers William and John and sisters Lucia and Ruth.
Funeral services for Mr. Turunen were held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 from Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor John Autio officiating. Interment took place in the Nisula Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Baraga County area veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post #444 conducted military honors at the church on Monday at 12 noon. Memorials in Mr. Turunen’s honor may be directed to Mission United Lutheran Church.
